The Mythology of Angels

First let me say that the concept of angels that we have today is not supported by scripture. The common vision of angels is of spiritual beings with wings that fly around heaven doing things for God, including bring messages to mankind. The modern concept also says that angels have freewill (choice) because some have rebelled against God and have fallen.

Some of this comes from the Book of Enoch (BOE):

BOE 6:1-3 - And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven [sons of God as defined by the BOE], saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: "Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children."

According to the BOE this is a sin and these “angels” fell.

Normally I would go to someplace like Strong’s to get the correct definition but even Strong’s, first published in 1890, is tainted with the modern concept.

Literally an angel is a messenger from God. It can be a spiritual being, a human, or Yahshua. Because he was a minister to the congregation in the wilderness, even Korah was an angel.

Now, in regard to the spiritual beings, I refer to them as heavenly hosts.

[Genesis 2:1 NKJV] 1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.

They are spiritual beings created to do the will of God. They have no choice in the matter. Some are described in Ezekiel 1 and, yes, they have wings. The ones described by Ezekiel have the job of transporting the throne of God. You also have some described in Genesis 3 and Isiah 6.

As I said, there is nothing in scripture to indicate that these spiritual beings have a choice in the matter; they have a job to do and they do it. No choice in the matter means no free will so they cannot fall.

We must not let modern concepts mislead us regarding scripture. We must not let our minds lead us to pictures that do not exist.

[Exodus 20:4 NKJV] 4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness [of anything] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth;

Constructing an image of a spiritual being we call angels in our mind is making for yourself a likeness of something in heaven above.
