Title: Sons of God
Today’s Bible Verse: [Genesis 6:1-6 ESV] 1 When man began to multiply on the
face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that
the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they
chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not abide in man forever,
for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years." 4 The Nephilim were on the
earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the
daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who
were of old, the men of renown. 5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was
great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was
only evil continually. 6 And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the
earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
This is going to be a particularly controversial study, particularly for those
that accept the Book of Enoch as scripture. I know I will lose many friends
over this and get many negative comments. Just look at it first before you jump
down my throat.
This is also going to be long.
Before we look at these verses, first let us look at some terminology.
Angel in Hebrew: מֲלְאָךְ mălʼâk, mal-awk'; from an unused root meaning to
despatch as a deputy; a messenger; specifically, of God, i.e. an angel (also a
prophet, priest or teacher):—ambassador, angel, king, messenger.
Angel in Greek: †ἄγγελος ággelos, ang'-el-os; from ἀγγέλλω aggéllō (probably
derived from G71; compare G34) (to bring tidings); a messenger; especially an
"angel"; by implication, a pastor:—angel, messenger.
The commonality here is that an angel is a messenger. This could be a human, it
could be Jesus, or it could be a heavenly host.
We also see what I term heavenly hosts which may be called cherubim, seraphim,
archangels, and so on.
[Ezekiel 10:9 ESV] 9 And I looked, and behold, there were four wheels beside
the cherubim, one beside each cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was like
sparkling beryl.
[Isaiah 6:2 ESV] 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two
he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
While these creatures may act as messengers or angels they are not put in the category
of angel until they are acting as angels. They are servants of God and do His
bidding without fail and there is nothing in the Bible to indicate otherwise.
There is no indication anywhere in the Bible that these creatures have free will
or any capacity to fall. They simply worship God and do His bidding.
The big problem is that we have totally lost the definition of angel and freely
associate it with heavenly hosts, which we should not do. In most cases in the
Bible angels are humans. Honestly, it is the same way with adversaries or
satans.
So, how does God define sons of God? Well, let us let Him tell us.
[Matthew 5:9 ESV] 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called
sons of God.
[Romans 8:14 ESV] 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
[Galatians 3:25-26 ESV] 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under
a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
Matthew 5:9 came from the lips of Jesus; God Himself. It says that peacemakers,
humans, are the sons of God. Romans 8:14 tells us that those led by the Holy Spirit,
the reborn, are the sons of God and Galatians 3:25-26 tells us that those that
walk in faith, the reborn, are the sons of God. Matthew 5:9 came directly from
Jesus and Romans and Galatians came through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
from a man reborn through the Holy Spirit. All of these verses came directly
from God either directly or by inspiration. So, the sons of God are the reborn.
So, looking back at Genesis 6:1-6, who are the sons of God that is being
referred to here? Look back at Genesis 5 and you will see the generations of
Adam. Here we have the beginning of the line that led to Jesus. Each man
mentioned was mentioned because each walked with God; that is, in modern
terminology, they were reborn.
Some call this the line of Seth but I choose to call it the line of Adam. Yes,
Adam fell but he repented His fall and regained the promise of salvation.
If you look at Genesis four you will see the line of Cain. This lineage was
cursed because of the iniquity in it.
[Genesis 1:27 ESV] 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God
he created him; male and female he created them.
This shows us that there were many humans created on day six and after the fall
these humans were also fallen. It is from these humans that Cain got his wife
and it also from these humans and their increase by the line of Cain that the
wives of the line of Adam came. It should be simple to see that their daughters
were the daughters of man. Even if they had become reborn, women were never
referred to as the daughters of God.
So, what is this Nephilim referring to? The KJV calls them giants.
Giant – Nephilim: נְפִיל nᵉphîyl, nef-eel'; or נְפִל nᵉphil; from H5307;
properly, a feller, i.e. a bully or tyrant:—giant.
It is a bully or a tyrant. Yes, the fall produced tyrants and though they may
not have been giant in stature they certainly were giant in power. We still
have them with us, people like Hitler, Stalin, Mousseline, Mao, and so on.
Looking back at Genesis 6:1-6, all it is
telling us is that the righteous line of Adam mixed with the other daughters of
mankind. Some of these families produced godly children but most produced
corruption as is the case with fallen man.
[Genesis 6:5 ESV] 5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the
earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually.
It came to the point when man had almost become totally corrupt. The only
exception was Noah and his family.
Genesis 6:1-6 is not a story of heavenly hosts mating with humans to produce
giants. It is the story of how even the families of godly men can produce
corruption due to the fall.
You never have to accept my word. Go and look at your Bible and pray over it.
Let His Holy Spirit guide you in this as I do. We have so many tools today that
help us study the Bible and many of these tools show us how the Bible
interprets itself.
I am not an expert. I have not gone to seminary. I am not formally trained. I
just let His Holy Spirit lead me in the scriptures for these studies and in the
study.
Faith is given to His elect by God. Faith is the overwhelming belief in God; it
is not head knowledge, it is a deep down in your soul belief that God is your
creator and your means of salvation from His wrath due to the fall. This faith
was given to His elect from before creation. We have it for His glory.
Through our faith we know that Jesus died for us, and we have justification
through Him. This justification means that our sin is covered with the blood of
Jesus and, though we may die physically, we are not dead spiritually and will
be resurrected into everlasting life when Jesus returns.
It is the elect that have salvation and it is my prayer that you are among the
elect and that this serves as your catalyst for awakening.
This is the gospel:
[1 Corinthians 15:1-6 NLT] 1 Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters,
of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still
stand firm in it. 2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to
believe the message I told you--unless, of course, you believed something that
was never true in the first place. 3 I passed on to you what was most important
and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the
Scriptures said. 4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third
day, just as the Scriptures said. 5 He was seen by Peter and then by the
Twelve. 6 After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one
time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
[Acts 2:22-24 NLT] 22 "People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed
Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him,
as you well know. 23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan
was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you
nailed him to a cross and killed him. 24 But God released him from the horrors
of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
[1 John 2:2 NLT] 2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins--and
not only our sins but the sins of all the world.
This is penal substitution; that is, our sins were transferred to Jesus and His
righteous transferred to us.
We all have a job.
[Matthew 28:18-20 NLT] 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been
given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and
the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have
given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the
age."
All of the disciples of Jesus are to spread His word and the gospel.
Go forth and spread this good news.
I pray that God has revealed Himself to you and that you have salvation.
Remember, God is sovereign. That means that he controls everything.
I hope this has been a blessing to you. May the rest of your day be blessed. Peace.
