Shalom brothers and sisters.
Today’s Bible Verse: Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Verse Text: [Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 NKJV] 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. 14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.
The Bible uses the word fear at least 300 times in reference to God. Many people will tell you that this means a reverence but there are many examples of legitimate fear in regard to God; one of which is when the Israelites were called to the mountain and they were literally shaking in their boots.
Then we have this:
[1 John 4:18 NKJV] 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
We know that God loves us so how can we reconcile fear Him with no fear in love?
Fearing God is a positive thing and there are many verses that show this.
[Genesis 42:18 NKJV] 18 Then Joseph said to them the third day, "Do this and live, [for] I fear God:
Joseph gains the trust of his brothers through his fear of god.
[Exodus 1:17 NKJV] 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.
It was the fear of God that caused the midwives of Israel in Egypt to disobey the king and that saved the lives of many children.
[Exodus 9:29-31 NKJV] 29 So Moses said to him, "As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the earth [is] the LORD's. 30 "But as for you and your servants, I know that you will not yet fear the LORD God." 31 Now the flax and the barley were struck, for the barley [was] in the head and the flax [was] in bud.
Pharaoh did not fear God and brought disaster on Egypt.
[Exodus 18:21 NKJV] 21 "Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place [such] over them [to be] rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
These able leaders feared God and would not take bribes.
[Matthew 10:28 NKJV] 28 "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
It is just not an Old Testament thing; the New Testament shows us that we are to fear God as well.
It is very clear from these passages, that fearing God is good because it saves us from falling into our own sinful nature. This is why hearing someone is God-fearing actually makes us trust that person more. If they fear God, they are more likely to keep their word and treat others with kindness.
Romans 3, the classic chapter on sin, says that the chief sin is not fearing God:
[Romans 3:18 NKJV] 18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."
In truth, God is far more scary than the world and I do fear Him. I know that He can destroy me at any moment that He so desires and believe me, I have given Him good cause to do so. But, the love part is His grace and mercy and we see this through Yahshua.
[John 3:16 NKJV] 16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
My fear keeps me walking Torah and away from the temptations but His grace and mercy keeps me here telling you about Him.
Go forth and spread this good news.
I hope this has been a blessing to you. May the rest of your day be blessed. Walk Torah-ly. Shalom.
