Mark 10:17-22

Shalom brothers and sisters.

Today’s Bible Verse: Mark 10:17-22

Verse Text: [Mark 10:17-22 NKJV] 17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" 18 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one [is] good but One, [that is], God. 19 "You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and your mother.' " 20 And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth." 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Notice this:

[Mark 10:18 NKJV] 18 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one [is] good but One, [that is], God.

Yeshua did not reprimand the man for calling Him good; He simply asked why. I think here He was letting all know by implication; that is, all that care to look,  that He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

[Mark 10:19-20 NKJV] 19 "You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and your mother.' " 20 And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth."

But, these were the love your neighbor as yourself commandments; the last six.

[Exodus 34:29 NKJV] 29 Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony [were] in Moses' hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.

There were two tablets; one with the love the Lord your God with your whole heart, whole soul, and whole strength commandments, the first four; and another with the love your neighbor as yourself commandments, the last six.

Yahshua was citing the second tablet. The man indicated that he always loved his neighbor as himself.

[Mark 10:21-22 NKJV] 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Yahshua noted that the man failed in the first tablet in that he had another god, his possessions.

What did Yahshua mean by “and come, take up the cross, and follow Me”? At that time a cross was not just a symbol of pain and suffering, it was mainly a symbol of death. What He was telling this man was  to put to death his own plans and desires, and then turn his life over to God and do His complete will every day.

So, the two questions I have for you are:

1. Do you have another god before you like possessions?
2. Are you willing to set aside your own plans and desires and do the will of Yahshua every day? That is, are you willing to live by Torah as He does?

Go forth and spread this good news.

I hope this has been a blessing to you. May the rest of your day be blessed. Walk Torah-ly. Shalom.
