Peace to you my brothers and sisters.
Today’s Bible Verse: [Acts 4:8-13 ESV] 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy
Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being
examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means
this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the
people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you
crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by him this man is standing before
you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders,
which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for
there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be
saved." 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived
that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they
recognized that they had been with Jesus.
This was written to first century believers; specifically, the leadership of
the believers.
[Acts 4:1-3 ESV] 1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the
captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed
because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection
from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next
day, for it was already evening.
Peter and John had come into Jerusalem to speak at the temple and during that
time had healed a lame beggar (Acts 3). As a result, as seen at the beginning
of Acts 4, the temple leadership had them arrested.
[Acts 4:4-7 ESV] 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the
number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers
and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high
priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the
high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired,
"By what power or by what name did you do this?"
The next day the leadership of the believers and the leadership of temple
gathered to have Peter and John explain themselves. This is where we enter Acts
4:8-13.
[Acts 4:8 ESV] 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,
"Rulers of the people and elders,
It is not Peter doing the explaining, it is the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 4:10 ESV] 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of
Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom
God raised from the dead--by him this man is standing before you well.
The man was healed not by the power of Peter and John but by the power of Jesus
flowing through them by the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 4:11-12 ESV] 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the
builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one
else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must
be saved."
This is a summary of the gospel. By the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus
the elect are given salvation.
[Acts 4:13 ESV] 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and
perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they
recognized that they had been with Jesus.
And it is by Jesus that uneducated, common men, like me, have the ability to
understand scripture. I have not spent one day in any formal religious education.
My understanding comes from the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I pray that you
are guided by Him as well.
This is the gospel:
[1 Corinthians 15:1-6 ESV] 1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I
preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are
being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--unless you
believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also
received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4
that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the
Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he
appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still
alive, though some have fallen asleep.
[Acts 2:22-24 ESV] 22 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth,
a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God
did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know-- 23 this Jesus,
delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you
crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing
the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
[1 John 2:2 ESV] 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only
but also for the sins of the whole world.
Propitiation: ἱλασμός hilasmós, hil-as-mos'; atonement, i.e. (concretely) an
expiator:—propitiation.
This is penal substitution; that is, our sins were transferred to Jesus and His
righteous transferred to us.
We all have a job.
[Matthew 28:18-20 ESV] 18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And
behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
All of the disciples of Jesus are to spread His word and the gospel.
Go forth and spread this good news.
I pray that God has revealed Himself to you and that you have salvation.
Remember, God is sovereign. That means that he controls everything.
I hope this has been a blessing to you. May the rest of your day be blessed. Peace.
