Galatians 5:19-21

Peace to you my brothers and sisters.

Today’s Bible Verse: Galatians 5:19-21

Verse Text: [Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV] 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told [you] in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Adultery: נָאַף nâʼaph, naw-af'; a primitive root; to commit adultery; figuratively, to apostatize:—adulterer(-ess), commit(-ing) adultery, woman that breaketh wedlock.

Adultery is having sex outside of wedlock but there is also spiritual adultery; that is, worshipping things other than God. Remember what God said:

[Exodus 20:4-6 NKJV] 4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness [of anything] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth [generations] of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

When God says that He is jealous it means that He does not bear any rival. This should go without any saying; He is our creator and He should not have to bear any rival.

Fornication: זָנָה zânâh, zaw-naw'; a primitive root [highly fed and therefore wanton]; to commit adultery (usually of the female, and less often of simple fornication, rarely of involuntary ravishment); figuratively, to commit idolatry (the Jewish people being regarded as the spouse of Jehovah):—(cause to) commit fornication, × continually, × great, (be an, play the) harlot, (cause to be, play the) whore, (commit, fall to) whoredom, (cause to) go a-whoring, whorish.

Simply put, fornication is the act of having sex outside of wedlock. Again, there is spiritual fornication which is the actual act of worshipping anything other than God.

The difference between adultery and fornication is that adultery is the concept and fornication is the act.

Uncleanness: טֻמְאָה ṭumʼâh, toom-aw'; from H2930; religious impurity:—filthiness, unclean(-ness).

Basically this is being religiously impure. Some examples of becoming unclean include touching the carcass of an unclean animal, touching a menstruating woman, and so on. In many cases the situation can be resolved by washing but, even so, the person will remain unclean until evening.

What Galatians 5:19 is talking about is more than this. It is a perpetual state of uncleanness.

Lewdness: זִמָּה zimmâh, zim-maw'; or זַמָּה zammâh; from H2161; a plan, especially a bad one:—heinous crime, lewd(-ly, -ness), mischief, purpose, thought, wicked (device, mind, -ness).

We have come to define lewdness as inclined to, characterized by, or inciting to lust or lechery; lascivious. obscene or indecent, as language or songs; salacious. By our definition it still is wickedness.

Idolatry is the act of worshipping idols. Idols can be any object other than God; including money and power.

Sorcery: נַחַשׁ nachash, nakh'-ash; from H5172; an incantation or augury:—enchantment.

Sorcery is the act of magic or casting of incantations. It was believed that casting incantations caused the gods or demons to either act favorably or unfavorably on a person. It is a form of idolatry.

Hatred is simple but in the Biblical sense it is more than just not liking somebody. In the Biblical sense is not liking someone to the point of doing harm to them.

Contentions: מִדְיָן midyân, mid-yawn'; a variation for H4066:—brawling, contention(-ous). Simply put, brawling or fighting.

Jealousies in this sense is being jealous; that is envious of someone because of their possessions, their spouse, their achievements, and so on.

Outbursts of wrath: Taking violent action against a person. Vengeance can also apply.

Selfish ambitions: being braggadocios. This is when you put yourself forward as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Dissension: Causing division. Your way is the right way and all must follow you.

Heresies: Putting forth opinions that are contrary to scripture.

Envy: a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck.

Murder: killing another human being maliciously.

Drunkenness: consuming alcohol to the point of intoxication.

Revelries: A wild party and can also mean a riot.

This is the heart of man before being born again. When one is born again, His Holy Spirit acts within to prevent such actions.

Go forth and spread this good news.

I hope this has been a blessing to you. May the rest of your day be blessed. Walk Torah-ly. Peace.
