Who Are The Sons of God?

Let’s take a look at how the sons of God is used.
The are 10 exact matches in the NKJV.

[Genesis 6:1-3 NKJV] 1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they [were] beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. 3 And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he [is] indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."

This is the verse many false teachers point to as indicating that the sons of God are angels, as in, heavenly hosts but they fail to point out the context. We need to look at verse one and verse three to see the context; that is, man. I know that His ways are not our ways but why would God be talking about man in verse one and three and then suddenly change the context to heavenly hosts in verse two?

What you need to do is follow the progression of Genesis five and relate it back to Luke 3:36-38. From Noah back to Adam in Luke 3:36-38 is the list of patriarchs in Genesis five and by being sons of Adam in the righteous line then they are sons of God.

I know that I am going to get neigh-Sayers here that are going to insist that I am wrong and that these angels but this is a concept that comes from the Book of Enoch and the Book of Enoch is not scripture. I have given up arguing with them and will just say that those that teach the “angel doctrine” are false teachers.

[Genesis 6:3-7 NKJV] 3 And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he [is] indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." 4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore [children] to them. Those [were] the mighty men who [were] of old, men of renown. 5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every intent of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them."

The verse that mentions sons of God here is verse four. This goes back to the argument I made above.

The argument by the false teachers is that because this mentions giants then these giants must be the product of heavenly hosts mating with women. Again, this was popularized from the Book of Enoch.

If we look at the word giants we see the Hebrew word nÄ•phiyl and this has been popularized into Nephilim and defined as the giant product of angels mating with women. If we dig down into the Strong’s on this we see: properly, a feller, i.e. a bully or tyrant. So, we are not talking about giants as in 450 foot tall people as popularized by the modern definition but tyrants.

We are also told, “Those [were] the mighty men who [were] of old, men of renown”; basically, these men were famous for their tyranny. We can see that today; look at the tyrants of history; Nero, Alexander the Great, Hitler, Stalin, and so on. These people are “famous” in our culture.

Also, look at the context around verse four; man. Again, the sons of God are from the line given in Genesis five.

Like I said, those entrenched in the “angel doctrine” will say I am wrong on this and one of them even said I was dead wrong. The only dead thing is the false teaching of those using the “angel doctrine” to define sons of God because their teaching leads to death.

[Job 1:6 NKJV] 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

[Job 2:1 NKJV] 1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

Let’s open up the context on both of these:

[Job 1:6-7 NKJV] 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7 And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it."

[Job 2:1-2 NKJV] 1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it."

The usual argument from the false teachers is that since satan is there and they are in the presence of God then this must be in heaven and the sons of God are angels but who is satan?

The English word satan in Hebrew is satan and is usually written as ha satan or, the satan. Simply put, the satan is an adversary. In Job the satan is Job’s adversary; someone that has something against Job.

The assumption made when the Book of Job says that these beings were in the presence of God then it must be in heaven; however, God is everywhere. There is no place you can go in this universe and not be in His presence.

Unfortunately, we have developed all of this mythology around the satan and heaven and we have lost the true context as a result.

Returning to my argument about the sons of God in Job, look at this:

[Job 1:1-5 NKJV] 1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was] Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil. 2 And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East. 4 And his sons would go and feast [in their] houses, each on his [appointed] day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings [according to] the number of them all. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did regularly.

Here we see that Job had seven sons and each one would have a feast in his house on his appointed day; that would be seven feasts on an appointed day for the feast. If you look at Leviticus 23 you will see that God has seven appointed feasts for man. My argument is that Job and his sons were celebrating these feasts and Job continued to do them even after he was severely stricken by his adversary.

While celebrating God’s appointed times does not make one righteous it does show a dedication and this is the same dedication that the line of people in Genesis five had, so, this made Job, his sons, and all of his servants sons of God.

[Job 38:7 NKJV] 7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Looking at the context:

[Job 38:4-13 NKJV] 4 "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell [Me], if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8 "Or [who] shut in the sea with doors, When it burst forth [and] issued from the womb; 9 When I made the clouds its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling band; 10 When I fixed My limit for it, And set bars and doors; 11 When I said, 'This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!' 12 "Have you commanded the morning since your days [began], [And] caused the dawn to know its place, 13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

The whole context here is Genesis one; the creation account. Specifically, to the first four days of creation. The allusion of Job 38:7 is that there were witnesses to the creation and the false teacher jumps to the conclusion that it was angels but if we look at day four we see the creation of the sun, moon, and stars; these were the witnesses. Specifically, here and only here is the sun and moon being referred to as the sons of God.

[Matthew 5:9 NKJV] 9 Blessed [are] the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.

This is clearly a reference to people.

[Luke 20:36 NKJV] 36 "nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Here angel is referring specifically to a heavenly host; those that do the bidding of God.

Looking at the verse in context:

[Luke 20:35-36 NKJV] 35 "But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 "nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Once we are resurrected we will have an immortal body like the heavenly hosts. Those worthy are now counted as sons of God but will be even more so after the resurrection.

[Romans 8:14 NKJV] 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Again, it is easy to this referring to people.

[Romans 8:19 NKJV] 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.

Revealing the sons of God refers to the resurrection. See the reference to Luke 20:35-36 above.

[Galatians 3:26 NKJV] 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Again, it is clear to see that this refers to people.

Except for one place, when the Bible refers to the sons of God it is referring to man, not heavenly hosts. The only place we see sons of God being called angels is in the unscriptural Book of Enoch. This nonsense has contaminated the thinking of many people and has created many false teachers. God has warned us of this and we must do our best to lead people away from it.

Unfortunately this false "angel doctrine" has become so pervasive that the false teachers do not even know it is coming from the Book of Enoch. I have heard many times from the false teachers that they have never read the Book of Enoch.

I have used scripture, the truth, to show that the sons of God are not angels but the foolish false teachers will say I am wrong. You need to go look for yourself. You need to pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you in this.
