Authority of the Prophet’s Message

Shalom brothers and sisters.

Today’s Bible Verse: Amos 3:7

Title: Authority of the Prophet’s Message

Verse Text: [Amos 3:7 NKJV] 7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.

In context: [Amos 3:1-8 NKJV] 1 Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying: 2 "You only have I known of all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities." 3 Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? 4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing? 5 Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it? Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all? 6 If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done [it]? 7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. 8 A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy?

The Hebrew word for prophet is nabiy'; it is a messenger of God and declarer of His will. In Greek it is prophētēs and is an interpreter or spokesman for God; one through whom God speaks. It has the same meaning in Hebrew and Greek.

Amos 3:1-8 tells us that God reveals all to His prophets before He does a thing.

There is a test for false prophets: [Deuteronomy 13:1-3 NKJV] 1 "If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, 2 "and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods'--which you have not known--'and let us serve them,' 3 "you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

From Bob Deffinbaugh of Bible.org: Prophets are clearly distinct from teachers. In basic terms, a prophet is one through whom revelation is given, while a teacher is one who explains revelation.

To further explain: [1 Corinthians 12:28-29 NKJV] 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 [Are] all apostles? [Are] all prophets? [Are] all teachers? [Are] all workers of miracles?

While God has revealed His truth to me in His word through the Bible, my job is to explain it through the leading of the Holy Spirit of Jesus but I make mistakes and a prophet, by Deuteronomy 13:1-3, is not supposed to make mistakes. I am a teacher, not a prophet.

Honestly, I believed that all that is to be revealed to us for our time in this world has been revealed through the Bible and there are no prophets in the world. But I could be wrong.

I hope this has been a blessing to you. May the rest of your day be blessed. Walk Torah-ly. Shalom.
